Hanabi:Firework is a brand-new festival of performance, film, and discussion that celebrates and showcases the innovative work of The Flames, from Scotland and Japan.
Over 2 days in June 2025, we welcomed a diverse audience to join us for this daring inaugural festival, and to take part in making strides towards changing the cultural stigma of ageing in Scotland and beyond.
Bringing back showcase performances by The Flames and presenting brand-new collaborations between Scottish and Japanese artists, Hanabi:Firework interrogated and challenged how the world sees us as we age and spotlight daring and contemporary creative work after 50.
We had incredible dancing from Los Hocos (Kyoto, Japan) and collaborative performances from The Flames (Scotland) and Hono Flames (Sendai, Japan).
Joyous celebrations and challenging provocations filled the two days and we welcomed the audience to join us for a collective feast! If you missed out please watch – What’s Your Superpower?
